The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation will award more than $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding Wisconsin students pursuing higher education in 2017. Scholarship Opportunity! Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales Association is offering ten $1,000 college scholarships and two $750 technical college scholarships. Students must have completed two or more semesters at an accredited college or university, or any student who has completed one semester at a technical college.

NEW COUNTYWIDE PROJECT! All Ozaukee 4-H members are invited to join our new countywide CAT project. The meetings will be held the Third Tuesday of every month from 6:00-7:30 pm starting in October 2016. Meetings will be held in the Show Arena at the Fairgrounds. You can still add this project in 4honline. The first meeting will be October 18, 2016. A statewide Shooting Sports Leader Certification workshop will be held this fall on September 9-10. Certification workshops are designed to teach leaders how to conduct safe, supervised, shooting experiences for 4-H members enrolled in shooting sports projects.

The Manitowoc County 4-H is offering a Hunter Safety Camp July 18-21 to earn your Hunters Safety Certificate. Camp TaPaWingo is located on 78 acres along the East Twin River in northern Manitowoc County. Cost: $200, includes lodging, meals, all training materials, instruction, time at shooting range, and testing. Welcome to our new Agriculture Educator! Stephanie Plaster is the new Ozaukee and Washington County Interim Agriculture Educator with UW-Extension.  She grew up in Cedarburg and was a member of the Ozaukee County 4-H program in high school.  She went on to graduate from UW-Madison with a degree in International Agriculture focusing on Animal and Dairy Science.  While at Madison, she worked at the US Dairy Forage Research Center, competed at the National Meat Animal Evaluation Competition, and studied dairy systems in Mexico.  She received a Master of Agriculture from Colorado State University in Integrated Resource Management where she worked with beef and sheep ranch management.  Stephanie moved back to Milwaukee to work with an urban aquaponic farm before transitioning to her work with UW-Extension in 2013.   Stephanie was the agriculture educator in Langlade County where she worked primarily with vegetable and dairy producers and also managed the Langlade County Potato Research Station.  She is very excited to start her work with Ozaukee and Washington counties and serve the communities she calls home.

The Ozaukee County Agricultural Society is offering personalized picnic tables this year, that will be set out during the Fair. These are the tables that were used under the new Picnic Pavilion last year. The cost is $200 per table and can be personalized with your club name, family name, business name, or in honor or memory of someone. The lettering is done in plain block letter routering.
All orders due by July 1st.

Tractor and Farm Safety Camp- Does your son or daughter work on a farm during the summer? Do you hire youth to work for you during the year? Do these young people have adequate safety training? Accidents cause more deaths to individuals between the ages of 15 and 24 than all other causes combined. The Ozaukee County 4-H Foundation is making scholarships available to any active Ozaukee County 4-H member who is in their current high school graduating senior class, or one year past high school, with at least five years of 4-H Club membership and has fulfilled all 4-H achievement requirements in that year. Once an applicant is awarded a scholarship, they are not eligible to re-apply. Both accredited technical courses as well as collegiate course studies are acceptable for scholarship application. The application and additional information for the Ozaukee County 4-H Foundation scholarships is available below. The essay question changes annually, so please be sure to obtain the most current version directly from the new 4-H website. Forms can be completed online, then printed and mailed. The application, along with the required letters of recommendation and General Leader reflection must be postmarked by March 18th, 2016. The date and time of the personal interviews will be announced at a later date. We encourage 4-H youth of Ozaukee County to apply for these scholarships, which are made available by the generous donations of many. Fond du Lac County 4-H Family Learning Day Is Open to the Public!
Family Learning Day is a day filled with learning activities, new ideas and fun for the whole family. This event is open to the general public, where the whole family can forget about cabin fever and spend the day learning new skills. There are over 20 topics to explore: glass ornaments, Japanese art braiding, photography, veterinary science, knitting, build a birdhouse, volleyball, etc. There is something for everyone, 5 years old and up. All of the sessions are “Hands-on” activities. Join the fun at UW-Fond du Lac on Saturday, February 20, 2016, from 8:15 am to 2:00 pm. Participants must register by January 19. A new award trip will be offered for January 2017! It’s a Presidential Inauguration Experience at the 4-H National Conference Center in Washington DC. This is a late addition to the trip offerings, and Ozaukee County applications (cover letter, resume, essay, recommendation) are due by February 1. Do not register for the program on the National 4-H link. You must apply first through Ozaukee County to receive partial funding and become part of the Wisconsin 4-H Delegation. 4-H Art Beat! was created for 4-H members in grades 3-5 and their parents and leaders and is the introductory program for Wisconsin 4-H Arts and Communication! ArtBeat! will be held March 18 and 19, 2016, at our State 4-H Camp, Upham Woods in the Wisconsin Dells. The weekend will feature a look at a variety of arts projects including music, drama, visual arts, and more!

4-H members will explore their own creativity while discovering the great variety of 4-H Arts & Communication experiences available to them now and in the near future. Session leaders will be 4-H older youth, adult leaders and 4-H staff members with a wealth of experience to share.  Youth and adult participants will rotate through a variety of sessions which are hands-on and active and held at various sites throughout camp.  Both youth and adult participants stay in the warm and cozy heated cabins!  Camp begins Friday evening at 7 pm and ends Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.

The $50.00 dollar fee will include all materials and supplies, (including a very cool ArtBeat! backpack!) special snacks, overnight lodging and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Why not get a whole carload of youth and adults together from your county for some genuine 4-H bonding time?

Come join the excitement of this opportunity available to some of our youngest (and often most enthusiastic!) 4-H members!

The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation will award more than $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding Wisconsin students pursuing higher education in 2016. Wisconsin 4-H Foundation scholarships are awarded to students, based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance and future educational goals.

To be eligible for Wisconsin 4-H Foundation scholarships, students must have been a 4-H member for at least one year, have a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and be enrolled or planning to enroll at a university, college or technical school during the 2016-2017 academic school year.

The 4-H Art Lab will be held January 29-31, 2016, at our State 4-H Environmental Center, Camp Upham Woods, Wisconsin Dells. The registration deadline is January 8, 2016.  The registration fee is $80.00. PLEASE NOTE: this year’s Art Lab includes more time for you to be creative! Check-in will begin at 6:00 PM on Friday, January 29 and departure will be at 11:30 AM on Sunday, January 31. 4-H Art Lab is sponsored by 4-H Arts and Communications.

The mission of the Art Lab is to provide an in-depth and focused experience in the “art track” of choice. This year’s instructors have some amazing art experiences planned for you! Art tracks include Collage and Assemblage, Creative Writing, Tae Kwon Do, Film Making, Back to the Basics Photography, and Intermediate Photography! Each participant will choose one track for the entire weekend.

Did you know that your 4-H Club earns a share of the Haunt profits? Last year $5000 went into the club’s accounts.  For each hour you help setting up or working the Haunt, your club will earn money. It’s the best FUNdraiser ever! WE NEED YOU! Set-up help is needed on Saturday 10/3 from 9am-3pm, Wednesday 10/7 from 6-9 pm, Saturday 10/10 from 9am-3pm and Mon-Thursday 10/12-15 from 6-9pm.  Come for an your or stay for the day! Plan to build, decorate, paint, organize, etc.  We need any and all help (parents and youth) for set-up at the Fairgrounds in the Dairy Barn. And the best part…it’s FUN!

Cost:

  • $100 registration fee for youth and for adults

(Includes 4 meals, breaks, facility fees and supplies) Market Fresh Buffet will be used for lunch and breakfasts.
Lodging:

  • Youth Shared 3-4 Occupant – $35/person
  • Adult Shared 3-4 Occupant – $35/person
  • Adult Shared Double Occupancy – $60/person
  • Adult Single Occupancy  – $75
  • Family Shared Double Occupancy – $60/person
  • Family Shared 3-4 Occupants – $35/person

Note: The room cost increases if there is more than one person.  This is why the room rates are not half of the single room rate.

The program kicks off Friday evening with over 15 interactive sessions.  Saturday offers more than 25 workshops to choose from.  Top off the night with a special celebration where 11 people will be inducted in to the Wisconsin 4-H Hall of Fame.  An evening of circle dancing and table games will follow the celebration.   Sunday morning brings a high energy program that you can use at the club or community level.

This program is partially funded by the WI 4-H Foundation.

Ask your county Extension Staff about registering today.  Register through 4HOnline. Registration will end September 28. 

Remember all youth need to have an adult chaperon that needs to identified when registering.  The chaperon needs to be an enrolled 4-H Volunteer Leader. County staff must review and approve chaperones.

What needs to be completed for your registration to be accepted?

    • Payment needs to be received.  (Check with your county 4-H Youth Development Staff to see if the county 4-H Leaders Association is offering any funding to assist with registration.  This will vary from county to county.)
    • Required health form for youth
    • Adults are encouraged to use the adult health form – not required.
    • Registrations will be reviewed by county staff before they are accepted.

Last year over 300 youth leaders, adult volunteers, and staff participated.  We hope over to increase that to 400 this year.

September marks the month for 4-H re-enrollment for the 2015-2016 4-H year!  4-H Online will open for re-enrollments on Thursday, September 3rd and will remain open until the end of the day September 30th for all current 4-H’ers to re-enroll.  Instructions for re-enrolling are found here: 4HOnline-Re-Enroll.  Please remember to use your current 4-H Online account when re-enrolling (you should not have to create a new account).  We ask that you please double-check that all information is current/accurate and spelling and punctuation is correct.  This will help save some office time when reviewing/approving re-enrollments.  Thank you!

Are you interested in Rifle or Shotgun Projects? These projects require youth to be 12 years old and have completed a Hunter Education Class.  Saukville Gun Club will have a class beginning Tuesday, September 8.  The four-week class will be led by DNR instructors.  Classes will be held at 7 pm on Tuesday and Thursdays at the clubhouse, 4190 Blue Goose Road. The 156th Annual Ozaukee County Fair will be held July 29-August 2, 2015. Many 4-H volunteers are needed for the fair to be successful.

Each 4-H family is required to sign up for 2 spots per member in 3rd grade and above. For example, if you have 4 children in 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th grades, your family needs to sign up for 8 time slots. Kids, Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa can all help fill your spots. Cloverbud members are not required to volunteer. Select your volunteer spots through theFair Volunteer Sign-up Genius.

Show Your Creativity! Participate in Quilt Expo’s Kids’ Quilt Challenge!

Youth age 15 and under are invited to enter their quilts in this year’s Kids’ Quilt Challenge. The contest is part of the annual, award-winning Quilt Expo presented by Wisconsin Public Television and Nancy Zieman Productions. Quilt Expo will be held Thursday, Sept. 10 through Saturday, Sept. 12 in the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

The Kids’ Quilt Challenge, sponsored by Nancy Zieman Productions, awards gift certificates to the top three quilts — a $200 certificate for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. 4-H International Host Opportunities for 2015

Host an International Teen this Summer!

There are several young people from Japan and South Korea who would love to spend time with Wisconsin 4-H youth this summer! Maybe you’ll invite one of them to your home? If you are between 10-18 years old and want to take part in a month that will stay with you for a lifetime, apply now. Chaperone hosts are also needed for two week periods during these time frames. Applications will be accepted but hurry for your preferred choice of delegates. Hosting requirements include having a genuine interest, being flexible and willing to spend time with the youth, and having an extra bed available (not necessarily an extra room). Previous hosting experience is not required. All host adults must be complete Wisconsin 4-H Youth Protection. The delegation will be in Wisconsin between July 26-August 22.

Call for 2015-16 International Academic Year Host Applications

If you have enjoyed a short term hosting experience or simply love working with students from other cultures, consider hosting a Eurasian student through the C.S.I.E.T. approved 4-H Japan or Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) High School Programs. Students arrive in August and depart in June. A host brother or sister of high school age is not a prerequisite and young or retired couples involved as 4-H leaders are also urged to apply.

4-H International Summer Host Opportunities for 2015- Hosts needed for 4-H summer and Academic Year international students. Share your American culture and life by providing a welcoming home to a new friend from another country.

In the summer of 2015, more than 70 youth from Argentina, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and Norway will spend a month living with Wisconsin host families and learning about American culture.   2. 18 year old male;, Norway; likes photography, piano, swimming, fishing, boating, camping, cooking, painting/drawing, art; is sociable, tolerant, patient, cheerful, considerate, honest, and energetic.
  3. 18 year old male, Norway; likes volleyball, fishing, boating, watching ice hockey, movies, trying new food; is sociable, curious, cheerful, quiet, patient, tolerant, serious, considerate, energetic and laughs a lot.
  4. Argentine youth bios are not yet available but include 15-19 year old youth with various interests (usually including soccer).

Japanese and South Korean youth between ages 12-16 with a wide variety of interests are available between July 26-August 22.

Mexican youth between ages 12-19 with a wide variety of interests are available between July 3-August 4.

Camp TaPaWingo, located in Mishicot, Wisconsin,  is offering Tractor & Farm Safety Camp April 17-19, 2015. This camp will include all meals, lodging, training materials, and 24 hours of class time. It is open to any youth in Wisconsin. It is a great opportunity to complete the Tractor & Farm Safety Course in one weekend! Please share this opportunity with your youth!

Federal law requires that youth under the age of 16 must be certified before being hired to work with any tractors and tractor machinery. Wisconsin Act 455 mandates any youth under the age of 16 cannot operate a farm tractor or self-propelled farm implement on a public highway unless the youth has been certified as successfully completing this safety training course.

The Blue Ribbon Sale of Champions Foundation has increased their scholarship awards once again this year to $15,000 and fifteen of Wisconsin’s best youth will be the recipients. The Foundation has awarded the scholarships on an annual basis recognizing the achievements of Wisconsin State Fair Junior Livestock exhibitors and assisting them with their educational expenses. Individuals must be between the ages of 17-19 as of January 1st of the current year in order to be eligible to apply. They must also be a current or past junior livestock exhibitor who has exhibited beef, sheep, and/or swine at the Wisconsin State Fair. Applicants must pursue a post high school education, and be enrolled or planning to enroll in a University, Vocational/Technical School or University short course. Only one scholarship will be awarded per individual and previous winners may not apply.

All applicants are required to fill out and return a Blue Ribbon Sale of Champions Foundation Scholarship Application, postmarked no later than April 1, 2015 to: Blue Ribbon Sale of Champions Foundation Scholarship, c/o Mary Beth Carr, 3492 Paradise Drive, West Bend, WI 53095. All scholarship winners will be recognized at the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction on Wednesday, August 12, 2015.

The Ozaukee County 4-H Foundation is making scholarships available to any active Ozaukee County 4-H member who is in their current high school graduating senior class, or one year past high school, with at least five years of 4-H Club membership and has fulfilled all 4-H achievement requirements in that year. Once an applicant is awarded a scholarship, they are not eligible to re-apply. Both accredited technical courses as well as collegiate course studies are acceptable for scholarship application. The application and additional information for the Ozaukee County 4-H Foundation scholarships is available below. The essay question changes annually, so please be sure to obtain the most current version directly from the new 4-H website. Forms can be completed online, then printed and mailed. The application, along with the required letters of recommendation and General Leader reflection must be submitted to the extension office by 5:00 p.m., March 13, 2014 (postmarked March 12 if mailing). The date and time of the personal interviews will be announced at a later date. We encourage 4-H youth of Ozaukee County to apply for these scholarships, which are made available by the generous donations of many. Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Scholarship

The Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board will award three $1,000 scholarships, for use during the second semester of the 2015-16 school year, to third or fourth-year college students pursuing dairy-related or food science degrees at one of Wisconsin’s four-year universities. Two additional $1,000 scholarships will be made available to high school seniors planning to pursue a dairy-related or food science degree at one of Wisconsin’s four-year universities or students studying in a two-year, technical school program related to dairy or food science. Applicants will be evaluated on involvement and leadership in ag-related activities, scholastic achievement, and career objectives. Finalists will be interviewed in mid-April, with the recipients to be recognized at the 2015 Wisconsin State Fair.

2015 4-H Art Lab! The 4-H Art Lab will be held January 30-31, 2015, at our State 4-H Environmental Center, Camp Upham Woods, Wisconsin Dells. The registration deadline is January 6, 2015. The registration fee is $50.00. 4-H Art Lab is sponsored by 4-H Arts and Communications.

The mission of the Art Lab is to provide an in-depth and focused experience in the “art track” of choice. This year’s tracks include Print Making, Basketry, Taekwondo, Digital Storytelling, Photography, Print Making and Theatre Arts! Each participant will choose one track for the entire weekend.

4-H youth and adults will select one of a wide variety of educational tracks to go “in depth” and explore the art form that interests them the most! Participants will also work together in large groups for team building and sharing.

Why not get a group of youth and adults together from your county for a weekend of fabulous 4-H bonding and ART!

Dodge County UW-Extension (UWEX), in cooperation with high school agriculture instructors and others will again offer the Youth Farm Tractor and Equipment Operations Safety Training program. This program includes classroom instruction and a practical test and is held only once each year.

This course’s curriculum is the model for county programs across the country and includes instruction on topics: Safety It’s an Attitude; Livestock Safety; Pesticide Safety; Electrical Safety; Confined Space Safety and many others.

2015 classroom dates are three Saturdays — Jan. 17, Jan. 24 and Jan. 31. All classes will be held in the Dodge County Administrative Building Auditorium, 127 East Oak Street, Juneau. Classes are 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., with a short break in the morning and afternoon and lunch about noon. Students must bring their lunch. Parents should plan on attending the first 45 minutes of the first class for orientation.

Dates for the late April/early May practical driving test at the fairgrounds will be announced to participants when registrations are confirmed.

Pre-registration is required. Registration fees are $35/youth if registered by Jan. 9 and $45 after Jan. 9, 2015. To register, complete a registration form for each youth and return with payment to the Dodge County UWEX Office, 127 East Oak Street, Juneau. WI 53039. Registration forms are available at the Dodge County UWEX Office and online at http://dodge.uwex.edu.

Wisconsin state law (Act 455) requires that any youth under the ages 12-16 who operates a tractor or self-propelled equipment on the highway for a parent, must successfully complete a Tractor and Machinery Safety program. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) require those youths ages 14-16 that work for a non-parent must complete an approved farm safety course. Class participants younger than 14 will receive their federal certificate after they turn 14.

2015 Youth Pig Project Announced

The Wisconsin Pork Association Youth Committee is offering Youth Pig Project scholarships, designed to assist 4-H and FFA members in establishing swine projects that can lead to development of life skills and career opportunities in the Wisconsin pork industry. 4-H and FFA youth are eligible to apply for a $50.00 scholarship used to offset costs associated with their 2015 pig project. Up to ten $50.00 scholarships will be awarded. Age divisions are as follows: Ages 9-12, 13-15, and 16-19 (as of January 1, 2015).

In the application, youth must provide project goals for the year; PQA and/or MAQA certification date; a simple project budget; future goals and how they relate to the pork industry; and “why should the WPA select you for the scholarship.” To receive a copy of the application, please contact the WPA office at 1-800-822-7675 or download the application from the website at www.wppa.org.

Interested youth must complete and mail the Youth Pig Project application form no later than Feb 1, 2015, to: WPA, P.O. Box 327, Lancaster, WI 53813.   Youth who receive a scholarship will be asked to complete a follow-up questionnaire after their project year is complete. In addition, Wisconsin Pork Association is teaming up with show pig producers from across the state of Wisconsin to make this program even more beneficial. In addition to the $50.00 scholarship awarded by WPA, scholarship recipients may also be eligible to receive a buying credit from a cooperating Wisconsin producer. Producers interested in helping sponsor this program can contact WPA for additional details.

The Wisconsin Pork Association is offering scholarships to high school seniors and college students. Students with a sincere interest in the swine industry are encouraged to apply.

Wisconsin Pork Association Scholarship
The Wisconsin Pork Association scholarship is open to high school seniors pursuing post high school education in agriculture. Preference will be given to those students possessing leadership abilities and a sincere interest in the swine industry. Five finalists will be selected from the applications received to compete for the $500 scholarship, with each finalist receiving $250 for their participation. An interviewing committee will select finalists. The application for this scholarship can be downloaded here.

The Whitmore Memorial Scholarship was established as a legacy to the late Rex Whitmore, a master statesman and communicator who served as the first executive director of the Wisconsin Pork Producers Association.

Applicants must be a registered junior or senior at one of the following University of Wisconsin campuses: Madison, Platteville, or River Falls. This is a $500 scholarship, and priority will be given to applicants pursuing an Animal Science or closely related major, with each finalist receiving $250 for their participation.

The criteria considerations include grade point average (applicant should be in top one-third of class), extracurricular activities involvement and leadership positions, career interest and orientation, and financial need.

Gunderson Memorial Scholarship
The Wisconsin Pork Association, in cooperation with the family of Buell Gunderson, has established a scholarship program to recognize the many contributions that Gunderson made to the Wisconsin pork industry. Gunderson, together with his wife, Bernice, served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Wisconsin Pork Association for 20 plus years and assisted in growing the organization from its initial roots to the successful organization that it is today–sponsoring scholarships, developing youth programs and helping to support the pork producers of the state.

The Wisconsin Pork Association will accept recommendations or applications from county pork producer organizations, industry members, pork producers, and colleges or technical schools for recipients of the Gunderson Memorial Scholarship on an annual basis. Individuals who have shown considerable dedication and involvement in the pork industry will be considered for the $500 scholarship.

Application Deadlines
Individuals wishing to receive a copy of the scholarship applications can contact Wisconsin Pork Association at 1-800-822-7675 (in Wisconsin), 608-723-7551 (outside Wisconsin), or via e-mail at tvaassen@wppa.org. The application deadline is December 10, 2013.

Expand your communication skills and global understanding through a summer 2015 Wisconsin 4-H International immersion experience, a homestay that will open your world to new cultures, foods, and languages. Live with a host family as you experience their daily way of life. Youth 12-18 are eligible for homestay experiences in Japan; 15-18 for Costa Rica; 15-19 Norway, and Tanzania; and 16-19 for Australia; usually participants have rural or farm experiences in Australia, Costa Rica, and Norway, but all vary. Adult leaders are also needed. The application deadline is October 15, 2014

A statewide Shooting Sports Leader Certification workshop will be held this September to teach leaders how to conduct safe, supervised, shooting experiences for 4-H members enrolled in shooting sports projects and to complete required leader certification.

Central Area Statewide Certification Workshop – September 26-27, 2014 Central Wisconsin Sportsmen’s Club, Marshfield Discipline sessions: Archery, Rifle, Shotgun, Coordinator, Pistol & Muzzleloading

Cost:

$55—Saturday discipline-only—Leaders who completed a certification workshop in 2012, 2013 and spring 2014, may only need register for a Saturday discipline session of choice and pay a reduced $55 workshop fee.

The program kicks off Friday evening …with over 15 interactive sessions. Saturday offers more than 20 workshops to choose from. Top off the night with a once in a life time celebration as 100 people are inducted in to the Wisconsin 4-H Hall of Fame. Sunday morning brings a high energy program that you can use at the club or community level.
All youth participants need to have a chaperone who has completed Youth Protection identified when they register.

The Ozaukee County 4-H Ambassadors will be sponsoring 2nd Annual 18-hole Mini-Golf Tournment on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014. It will be held at Ozaukee Sports Center in Port Washington (955 Maritime Drive, Port Washington). The tournament will be from 10am to 4pm based on the  number of teams that participate.
